The worst of the summer heat has not settled yet, so new plants still have time to establish roots before temperatures push past 35°C for weeks at a stretch. By July, the planting window is mostly closed. What you see in the ground then either goes in with a serious irrigation commitment or waits until autumn.

If you are planning to buy plants in Cyprus before summer locks in, here is what to look for and what to prioritise.

Locally grown stock holds up better – Trust your Plant Nursery!

Not every plant nursery grows what it sells. Some buy imported stock wholesale, display it in pots, and move it on. That is not necessarily a problem for indoor plants, but it matters for anything going into a Cypriot garden.

Plants raised locally, in Cyprus soil and under Cyprus sun, are already adapted to the conditions they will face at home. Imported stock can look healthy in the pot and fail within weeks once it meets a Cypriot August.

At Q Gardens in Kalavasos, the nursery grows most of its own stock on-site. Over 800 ornamental varieties are raised specifically to remain healthy in the Mediterranean climate. When a plant has spent its early life here, it is not starting from scratch when you plant it out.

What to buy heading into summer

Drought-tolerant perennials
Lavender, rosemary, agapanthus, and bougainvillea all establish well if planted before peak heat. They need consistent watering through the first season, but become largely self-sufficient once rooted. These are some of the most practical ornamental plants for gardens in Cyprus.

Mediterranean trees
Olive trees are one of the most sensible additions to a Cypriot property. Long-lived, low-maintenance after the first year, and suited to both formal and informal layouts. Citrus trees (lemon, orange, mandarin) also do well in Cyprus conditions with proper drainage and a sunny position.

Succulents and cacti
For spots that get the most direct sun, succulents are the practical choice. They store water in their leaves and can go long stretches without irrigation once established. A wide selection is typically available at plant nurseries in Cyprus heading into the dry season.

Cypriot native plants
Plants native to Cyprus, including mastic (Pistacia lentiscus), carob (Ceratonia siliqua), and oleander (Νήριο πικροδάφνη), are naturally suited to the climate. They typically require less maintenance than ornamental imports and hold their shape through the summer with minimal intervention.

Magnolias
Magnolias are among the more distinctive trees available at plant nurseries in Cyprus. Q Gardens has raised them as a signature plant for years. They take patience to establish, but reward it. Few flowering trees make the same impression in a Cypriot garden once they reach maturity.

Questions worth asking before you buy

A good nursery will be able to answer basic questions clearly: Where was this plant grown? What does the watering schedule look like during its first summer? Does it need afternoon shade, or can it handle full sun all day?

If staff cannot answer these, that is useful information. Nurseries with their own growing operation tend to know their stock in detail. Retailers who resell imported plants often do not.

The pot matters more than it might seem

If you are buying container plants for a terrace or balcony, the choice of pot affects how well the plants survive summer. Terracotta is breathable but dries out fast. Plants in terracotta may need watering daily in July and August. Large glazed ceramic pots retain moisture longer and handle the heat better for most outdoor ornamentals.

Q Gardens stocks ceramic pots in sizes suited to outdoor use in Cyprus conditions, alongside a range of growing supplies.

Visiting with the family

A nursery visit does not have to be a quick errand. Q Gardens runs a small farm alongside the plant nursery: ducks, ponies, peacocks, and rabbits are part of the site, along with a certified playground and a cafeteria serving hot and cold drinks. If you are coming with children, it makes for a reasonable morning out rather than a five-minute stop.

[4081
4156
post-42329","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-articles","tag-plant-nursery
["GET
